Where Hillsboro is
Hillsboro is an unincorporated community in Coffee County. It is centered on the intersection of US 41 and State Route 127, between Manchester to the northwest and Monteagle to the southeast. The Cumberland Plateau rises to the east and Arnold Air Force Base lies to the west. The ZIP code is 37342.
The Census Bureau treats Hillsboro as a census designated place, and it counted 433 residents there in 2020. That number covers only the small mapped area around the community center. Many homes with a Hillsboro mailing address sit on larger tracts outside that area.
A little history
The Coffee County Historical Society notes that Hillsboro was once called Pond Spring. When Coffee County was formed in 1836, it was actually a bit larger than Manchester and was a strong contender to become the county seat. Manchester won, but Hillsboro remains one of the county's oldest communities.
What living here looks like
Because Hillsboro is unincorporated, there is no city government. County services come from Coffee County, and land use is handled by the Coffee County Codes Compliance office in Manchester. Daily errands often mean a drive into Manchester, and US 41 makes that a direct trip.

What to check before you buy in Hillsboro
Rural homes come with questions you will not face inside a city. Here are the ones I walk through with every buyer:
- Water and sewer. Find out whether the home has public water or a well, and whether it uses a septic system. Tennessee keeps septic permit records you can request.
- Electric provider. Duck River Electric Membership Corporation serves much of Coffee County outside Tullahoma.
- Zoning. If you plan to add a shop, keep animals or divide land, ask the county codes office before you buy.
- Schools. Rural addresses are generally served by Coffee County Schools. Confirm the specific school with the district.
- Survey and access. Make sure the boundaries and road access are clear, especially on acreage.

Outdoors nearby
Hillsboro sits between some of the best known outdoor spots in the area. To the northwest, the City of Manchester lists Rutledge Falls and the Little Duck River Greenway among its things to do, and Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park protects waterfalls, pools and trails along the Duck River. To the west, Woods Reservoir sits on Arnold Air Force Base land in Franklin and Coffee counties. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency lists public boat access and fishing piers there. To the southeast, US 41 climbs toward Monteagle and the Cumberland Plateau.
Acreage and greenbelt
Larger tracts around Hillsboro are sometimes taxed under Tennessee's greenbelt program, which values qualifying agricultural, forest or open space land by its present use.
